$300 is a bargain for a young dog needed all vaccines, microchipping and fixing. You’ll pay more than $300 1st year vet stuff. If an adult that is HW pos., that adoption fee isn’t a drop in the bucket for what hw tx costa so adopter gets a good deal. One of my dogs just had a lump removed surgically. It was $300 just for that. And my vet is reasonable. Anywhere else I’d have expected $1000. TP is a good rescue. Just busy and they are volunteers who have day jobs. My fosters were vetted immediately. There was no dropping the ball. I mostly fostered pyr mixes and large plain brown dogs. Those plain browns would have died at shelter. Once they got to me and their personalities came out, they were adopted fast. Those cur and shep mixes are awesome.
Well put. The reason I got involved with Take Paws is because they specialize in taking dogs from all over Louisiana who are in serious danger of euthanasia as well as dogs just abandoned in random spots.
The adoption fees go towards medical expenses that they don’t even cover. All dogs adopted from Take Paws have their neuter/spay, chip, and heart worm paid for by the rescue. They also provide a lot of supplies to all of their fosters.

Thank you for helping rescue. Keep up your good work.
You know, I still think about the dog who got sick at the shelter last year. That horrific Acadia Parish (most of mine came from there or Vermillion). He was healthy, until he wasn’t. Take Paws had a foster offer step up so they pulled him and straight to vet with poor prognosis: I asked the director the next day if I could go visit him bc he wasn’t expected to live. He needed to know he mattered. She said yes so I stopped by vet. I got to the vet and his foster was there sitting with him with a cheeseburger. He wasn’t responsive, but he knew love. I told him to fight and that he was a good boy. I had to leave but his amazing foster stayed. He didn’t make it. If only more fostered. If only he could have gotten out when healthy. I don’t know what took him, but these days I’m wondering if it was lepto. Thank you for saving these animals. We are called to be their caretakers. Hang in there when it gets tough. You matter.

Technically.
Look, they do good work by helping with the foster/adoption system. However, being in the industry and working with them for a while now, I do disagree with some of their practices and way of business.

Same, that one really got me tore up. I think there was a thread on here about that whole incident.
Another one that sticks with me: I drove out to Lake Charles to pick up a mom and her 6 puppies and also an abused dog someone took from either Jeff Davis Parish or Beauregard Parish. Her name was Faith, a 3-4yo boxer/hound mix who had been shot with buckshot and had acid poured on her.
I put the puppies (who were in a kennel) and mom in the back and then Faith in the front passenger seat. Before we hit Lafayette she put her head in my lap and stayed there until we got to Metairie. She finally knew she was safe and in good hands.
I dropped her off at Metairie small animal hospital since they agreed to take her in for Take Paws. Someone from that clinic adopted her the day she was released. I remember crying like a baby after dropping her off and wiping the blood off my front seat and pants from her wounds.

Thanks for all you do as well. It’s nice to meet others here who volunteers as well. I’m sure our paths have probably crossed at some point in person before.

We tried a couple of times for specific dogs, and it was kind of a joke, I do think it is because they are overwhelmed, and the fosters get 90% of the say in who adopts that particular dog.
Instead of being a complainer, I decided to volunteer for Texas/Louisiana GSP Rescue, since that is the breed we were interested in. I have fostered and rehomed a dozen GSP's, and now understand more about the process than I ever wanted.

If you are looking to adopt, don't just stop at Take Paws, there are a number of rescue orgs in the area that could help get you set up.

Thank you for all that you do! One thing though. It’s good fosters get last say bc they know the dog. I knew who might resource guard, or other quirks. Or if bombproof, etc. Once I went to meet and mom with a young child. They had stuff everywhere. Not messy, but old Nola house without many closets: I was worried the young dog might chew up shoes or toys and I didn’t want the dog to get blocked or the family upset at dog. I told my concerns to my coordinator who spoke with potential adopter and issue fixed and she was happily adopted and doing well. I also stayed in touch with all adopters to work out any issues. I still get updates and photos 2 years later of “my dogs.”
