In a dramatic, unexpected move, Swatch Group announced on Sunday it would exit Baselworld, the world’s largest watch fair. In a story that appeared in the weekend edition of Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek said “We are not here to amortize the expensive buildings by Herzog & de Meuron,” a reference to the Basel exhibition complex designed by the Swiss architect, which opened in 2013 and which cost the fair (and its exhibitors) more than $500-million. The departure is significant since Swatch is pulling out all of its 18 brands from the show in 2019, including Omega, Breguet, Blancpain, Harry Winston, Longines, Tissot, Jaquet Droz and more. Swatch Group is the fair’s largest exhibitor.

The move was not just about the cost, although Swatch will save $50-million by not exhibiting – an amount that includes accommodation and transportation costs

Holy shite! Have your own damn watch fair for that amount of money. The SWATCH WATCH FAIR. Or just keep the cash. It is $50 million after all.

I went to Baselworld in 2003 it was something to see, the booths for Rolex, Patek Phillipe and Omega were bonkers.

Swatch group doesn't need Basel. Basel needs Swatch

Is that a swatch watch? Do you know what time it is?
Does he run it deep enough, to take you there?

Did not know they owned all of those brands.
