I had one in 10th grade. It was awful.
First of all, you CAN pop it with a needle which would give me immediate relief. It would then drain some pretty nasty puss/fluid, then heal, and within 3-4 days you're right back where you started from. Also each subsequent time I'd pop it, that seemed to make it come back a little bigger and more painful.
Finally I went to this little office/outpatient surgical center near BR General Mid-City. They put me fully under and proceeded to dig a hole about 2.5" deep and about an inch in diameter... Right from the top of your asscrack down to what I'd guess was just millimeters from your tailbone. For the next few weeks, I'd have to pack the wound with light gauze until it stopped leaking and finally healed up.
I've never had any problems since...but it was pretty traumatic for a 15 year old.

My son's is a pilonidal sinus. He had surgery to close some of the holes. Closing all of them would have been very invasive. We had to do wound care for about 6 months for it to fully heal. After surgery, it abscessed once and landed him in the ER. It seems to be under control now with a scheduled regiment of Nair.
Jesus. My son’s is just the sinus, has never become infected. Idk if worth it to have the whole big surgery at this point. I knew one guy who had one then lost a good bit of weight. After that, the hole was bigger and not so compressed so he would just pull the clumps of hair out from time to time and never had any problems. My son could lose a few, maybe that would help. He’s an adult though so i can’t do it for him.

Do you know if this was the traditional surgery or the cleft lift procedure?
How long ago was this and how have your results been?

I don't know. It was hole in my butt. Never had a problem since. I think this was around 2000.

My 16 y/o son just had this surgery 7 weeks ago. This was done after his first surgery in April was unsuccessful. As of last week he is able to resume most activities. He does have a big scar now (30 stitches) but it is healing nicely.
Dr Brian Kann at Ochsner did the surgery.

My son has this issue. It’s a small cyst and has never been infected but he’s debating whether or not to get the surgery. Right now i think he’s just going to wait.
I would tell you to schedule it when it's convenient to you and your family instead of waiting. If it gets inflammed, infected, or ruptures, that usually happens when it's not convenient. Healing that surgery takes a long time and a lot of wound care. I've had one rupture and healed it, but it wasn't removed. It came back twice about 8-10 years later, it got inflammed, had it drained, then completely removed later. It ain't fun, but it'll keep recurring until you get it removed.

I just googled this and now I have a new irrational fear. Several people are saying their sons have it. I never heard of this growing up, is it a new thing? If you reach a certain age do you not have to worry about it?

Definitely not a new thing. My boss had one removed when he was 17 and he is in his early 50's now.
