Because Jimmy let the bigger acts run vanity labels. The vanity labels would foot most of the development and recording money, then Interscope would selectively distribute and SOMETIMES market the albums. But at the end of the day, the label is just the bank doing mostly predatory lending.
Edit: but yeah, they also did control a big chunk of the supply pipeline so they could manipulate the media outlets into doing what they wanted

What about now? He seems to do a lot with Dr Dre now. I know they made a lot of money off of Dr Beats (which they used their artist for free advertisement) especially when they sold it to Apple. This reminds me of a chart I saw awhile back, this is music sales throughout the decades.
It used to be a lot more profitable than it is today.
