Story on Iraq war vet’s service dog being stolen, am I being cynical?

Story on front page of Yahoo about a supposed army veteran being approached by a man who attacked her and stole her dog. There is no video and the only corroboration they have is a flower shop owner saw two men sitting in a car without seeing anything involving the dog.
Of course Yahoo has bought this hook, line, and sinker and all the comments are how terrible people are for doing this.
I smell a classic sympathy stunt with a GoFund me to follow. This checks many boxes on the sympathy hierarchy: woman, Army Vet and dog.
Just smells fishy to me.

We have to assume they only included this nugget because it was relevant. The shop owner gave police the license number and descriptions.
She said it was a silver Ford Focus. No other description or helpful information at all.
