Pretty interesting read in the link below. Everyone knows this picture....

But who is the man holding the gun? And what motivated him to pull the trigger? What about the man in handcuffs? Who is he and what lead to him being there?

As the reporter who took the picture later said....

quote:

...photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths...

He's been doing that lately, not sure what's going on.

But didn't the guy who shot him later set himself on fire out of guilt?

I don't understand why I'm getting down votes. It's well known that no quarter was asked or given during the island hopping campaigns. I've seen a number of vet interviews where they admitted to executing Japanese soldiers.

The Japanese were evil animals who did worse than execute their POWs. My grandfather walked with the other unfortunate souls on Bataan. Some of the stories he told (when he would actually talk about them) were very gruesome and unnerving. Like hanging a soldier by his feet in a tree and filling a burlap sack with tarantulas...they would shake the shite out of the sack to piss them off then pull the sack over the guys head and tie it at his waist. A terrible death. Other stories of cutting a man's genitalia off and forcing the guy next to him to eat them. If he would not, they would cut his off and go on down the line until someone ate it.
To hell with those animals. We should have nuked more cities.

I agree with what you said. My great uncle was in the Bataan death march as well. Ended up in Russia by the end of the war.

I'm simply saying we did the same thing that the guy in the picture did

Wow. How did that happen? I thought all the prisoners taken in the Philippines ended up on the Home Islands.

He wrote a book about it and it's been awhile since I've read it but I believe they were basically transported by boat through several locations including Korea. I think they somehow ended up being marched to the northernmost Japanese occupied areas and were eventually liberated by the Russians during their short time of eastern front engagement.

He's still alive and living in the Lafayette area.

Here's an interview LINK

Did the definition of clickbait change? I always thought it referred to a sensational article that was only written to draw clicks to a website.
