LAS VEGAS — The surveillance video shows a man walking back and forth at the intersection of Ogden and City Parkway in downtown Las Vegas.

The video is from Feb. 23.

Police say the man in the video is Shane Schindler and, after a few minutes, he makes an unexpected move.
The video shows Schindler standing over the mannequin decoy they placed in a sleeping bad.
A minute later, he reaches into a plastic bag and pulls out a mini-sledgehammer.
He uses both arms to lift the hammer over his head and strikes the mannequin.

Seconds later, Schindler walks away and officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department move in with guns drawn.

LVMPD Officer Larry Hadfield called the sting an innovative way to try and catch a suspected killer.
“You have a person who was randomly killing people and because of some out of the box thinking you had someone who was dangerous to anyone in this community, get put in jail, right where he belongs,” said Officer Larry Hadfield.

despite what the video shows he says he never used it to hit the mannequin.

Why do you ask is a man charged with attempted murder for this? The whole point of the sting operation was to catch who killed two previous homeless people in the same area as this sting operation that was setup by the police.

Even though it seemed to have caught who they were looking for, I could see plenty of wriggle room for the defense to get out of this one, even though Shane Schindler seems like a worthless POS.

The police gave him enough rope to hang himself with. It appears he is guilty of striking what he thought was a person with a hammer

Kind of, but not really close at all. Like...at all.

I don't see how you can sustain this charge without there being a human victim. Attempted murder is an inchoate offense of murder, which is defined as the "unlawful killing of another with malice afterthought." A mannequin is not another and cannot be killed, as it isn't alive in the first place.

I think they got him on this "attempted murder" charge just to detain him, with hopes of finding info on him that can tie him to the murders of the homeless people

Maybe they can argue the harm he tried to commit would have resulted in the death of another human being even though there was no human being.

They'd have to prove that he thought the mannequin was a real person and case closed.

I haven't followed this case but you are correct. If they get him for even one of the two murders, the attempted murder charge is irrelevant.

There is no way they can charge him with attempted murder even if he really did think that was a real person.

Because it wasn't a real person even if he thought it was.

Otherwise it is a "thought crime" instead of an actual crime.

Having said that, this sting was successful in figuring out the guy who is most likely responsible for the other murders, and now they know who to investigate in regards to the previous murders.

Ahhh, the old mannequin-in-a-sleeping bag to catch homeless person serial killer trick. Oldest trick in the book.

They prosecute child predators that think they are meeting up with underage teens when it's just a cop pretending to be a kid in a chat room.

If beating a mannequin with a hammer is a crime, then he should be charged.

If not, then no crime was committed.

I doubt it is a crime. However, they do have him on record saying he did not hit the mannequin with a hammer, even though the video clearly shows him doing such.
Plants seeds in jurors minds.
good first step for cops.
