They were employees of Marvel at the time, they worked for a salary, and marvel owned the work they produced. Artists receiving future royalties for the use of their work is a fairly recent thing. Same with actors, William Shatner received only his salary at the time for doing Star Trek, he never made a dime from re-use of the episodes or merchandising.

Yeah, and if you read up on the early history of Marvel and their predecessors, it's pretty interesting.
The guy that owned the operation (I think his name was Martin Goodman) was kind of the classic kind of small time hustler businessman that made it big. He had tons of shell corporations and stuff like that.
I don't think his employees played much into his profit sharing ideas. I think Stan Lee (real name Stanley Leiber I think) was married to Goodman's niece or something like that. Goodman had him doing lots of different duties at the beginning to save money on hiring more staff.
