Stacking washer and dryer question

Can you stack mismatching washer/dryer combos? Is the ability to stack them dependent upon the model, brand, or simply the washer being large enough to hold the dryer?
I'm in need of a new washing machine, but my dryer is in really good shape. I don't believe at this point I'd be able to find the matching washing machine model, so I'm hoping to pick up a different model to do so with.

If the dryer crushes, the washer weighs too much
You need to add -"paging napolean " to the thread title, btw. But he needs you paypal account info first

With enough ratchet straps you can pretty much use whatever washer you want.

I tried it once but it was a pain in the arse to take the dryer down every time I had to load/unload the washer.
