St. Louis Burials (LSU and SEC Related)

I learned something interesting tonight.
Yankee general and LSU superintendent William T. Sherman and Dred Scott are both buried at the Catholic Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
Confederate general and Ole Miss president Alexander P. Stewart, Dred Scott's owner Peter Blow, and Captain Henry Shreve are buried across the street at the secular Bellefontaine Cemetery.

I've passed by Sherman's grave on the way to family funerals before.

I've been to the Bellefontaine Cemetery. It's really nice as far as cemeteries go. The author William Burroughs is buried there.

Dred Scott's is only a few yards away just around the corner.

I don't know how nice Bellefontaine is. Calvary is very nice. As a Louisiana native though, I've seen plenty of more artistic cemeteries.
If you'd like to look around either of those though, I would highly recommend doing so between 8am and 11am.

IIRC, you can see Sherman's from the road (the car path within the cemetary). I wouldn't have looked for it without the LSU connection.

Bellefontaine had some opulent stuff too. I never thought I would dig going to a cemetery.

So is Sara Teasdale. Tennessee Williams is buried at Calvary.
By my count there are two Confederate and three Union generals buried at Calvary. There are five Confederate and 24 Union generals buried at Bellefontaine.

You should see some of the churches (regardless of religious affiliation).
The new Cathedral is the most incredible church I've ever been in. It was built in 1904 and is probably the most beautiful church in the US. It's called the new cathedral because the old one is the first catholic church west of the Mississippi (I think). Maybe the first cathedral.
The first time I walked in there was to do a Flat Stanley project for my nephew. I had to apologize to him because I couldn't bring myself to pull my phone out and take pictures. I was too awestruck.

Those tombstones will one day be taken down

As long as Mizzou has a standing invitation to the Independence Bowl, the Henry Shreve grave is safe.

And by “out” I mean to Europe.

I haven't been to Europe. I really would like to go to Italy, Ireland, and Belgium.
But the Cathedral Basilica in St Louis is an incredible church to see even if you've been to Italy and France.
St Francis Xavier (the SLU college church) and the St Francis de Sales Oratory (Latin Masses, not a parish church) are also beautiful.

It does look nice. Europe’s churches are truly spectacular and unparalleled but NOLA has some gorgeous Catholic Churches too. One of the few things i like about the city. I got married here:

That picture only tells about 1/1000th of the story.
I know NOLA has some incredible churches too. But I'm not blowing smoke about the new cathedral.

It has a grand look. I would check it out if I was in the area.

So this is now a pissing contest comparing nola churches to 800 or whatever year old churches in europe?
I have been to dozens of cathedrals in europe. Climbed the steps to the bell tower in over 10 of them.
They dont compare, but, to be fair, it is like comparing tiger stadium to a new nfl stadium. Sure, the new stadiums are wonderful. However, there is something about the mystic of something old with history.
One thing that i admire, yet get weirded out by, is the number of people buried in the floor in a old cathedral
