Generally you got the Western Union telegram saying they were MIA. My grandpa's parents got that. They didn't know anything until he was verified as a POW by the Red Cross.
For whatever reason my great grandma was told he was KIA. He was shot down near Saipan, so I'm guessing maybe there was eye-witness testimony that he was killed. In any case, my great grandmother was thrilled, obviously, to learn that he was alive and well.

Paternal Grandfather paratrooper in 11th Airborne served in Occupation of Japan.
Maternal Grandfather, 84th div., T Sgt., 334th regiment, Co. E, Rhineland. Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe. Bronze Star.
Completed a year of research last year, and took a trip with my parents and brother and retraced his footsteps through Europe. Literally stood in the foxhole remains in Belgium from his company 71 years later.
If anyone else had a relative in 84th, I can help you with research, and would love to share info.

My mom said she went to 14 different high schools... Her dad was in the army, original member of the 101st, glider pilot, flew into Normandy on D Day. Retired a Colonel. He died over 30 years ago, I never asked him many questions about it.

My Uncle (dad's brother) was shot and killed storming the beach at Normandy.

My dad was on the submarine, USS Silversides fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. A friend of mine asked him what he did during the war. His answer (just as serious and emotionless as possible), "I taught Japanese how to swim".

My old man was a lieutenant in the 1st marine div. on Guadalcanal. Artillery officer. Did some island hopping but was never in serious combat after that
He was rotated back and promoted and trained to invade Japan and was on a troop transport on the way when Mr Truman dropped the bombs
Thank god or I wouldn't be here
He. NEver would talk about it despite a curious kid who kept asking. When I kept asking he threw books at like the ones the HBO series "the pacific" wS based on.
Found out after he died, you remember the episode where one of the marines aLmost goes AWOL to stay with some girl in Australia, well my old man almost did that. And after The war ended the woman came from Australia to Baton Rouge to get him. Huge family scandal
Again, thank God that didn't happen or I wouldn't be here

My three oldest uncles (Mom's brothers) served in the Navy in the Pacific.
Father in law was an infantryman in the 34th Infantry Division in France. Was captured on his 19th birthday and spent the rest of the war as a POW in Germany.

Merchant Marine officer, was never sunk, B-17 pilot, fighter pilot. Both shot down. One got back ok, B-17 pilot spent rest of war in German POW camp. Most at risk of being killed was actually the Merchant Marine. They got butchered first few years of the war. None ever talked about shite.

I posted a little of this before in a different thread a few months ago:
My grandfather enlisted in the Army in 1939. While at Infantry School at Ft. Bragg, he met Gen. Bradley. He was his personal driver for 6 1/2 years. Here's a partial photo of him driving for Gen. Eisenhower:
ETA:
His brothers also were in the Army in Europe.
My other grandfather was also in the Army in Europe.
My grandmother's brother was in the Navy in the Pacific.

Moms dad was older with a family so he was a welder in NYC repairing/building ships.
Dads dad was in the ETO and came in Normandy but after the bad stuff. He saw plenty of action pushing to Germany and got caught up in the Battlle of the Bulge.
My MIL has an uncle that was killed in BOB first days. I've tried researching his unit and even got the after action reports but the fire at the archive halted the search dead in its tracks.
My FIL dad fought up through Italy. He was dressed down by Patton himself for having no uniform on. He and his crew just got done repairing some equipment and Patton didn't like their appearance. He served through some bitter cold and swore he would never be cold again. I really loved that man; when I picked him up one time in Arkansas to bring him to texas for Christmas he spent the hours answering any question I had about his time in the war. I only wish I had recorded it. He told me I know more than his three kids do. He passed at age 93.
Now, my moms dad... He lived in Florida before his death and he had a neighbor named Fritz. Fritz was a pilot in the Luftwaffe and was a hell of a story teller. Had much respect for the Brits, and often told of chivalry on both sides. He HATED the Russians; called them animals. He hated Hitler but loved his country and his fellow pilots in his group. I can't say what his acumen was, I mean he spoke of fighting the English and Russians. Not too many German pilots made it through both fronts. Maybe he was never bold because he died old. When he and Grandpa would argue you'd occasionally here them both cuss the other and say shot referring way back to their war. That was the shite. Fritz still had a heavy accent.
