Was reading the story about the two people sentenced to prison for their hate crimes at the African American birthday party.

I noticed that their sentences were as follows:

quote:

Torres was sentenced to 20 years, with 13 of those years to be served in prison.

Norton received a 15-year sentence, with six of those years to be served in prison.

What are the other years that they are NOT in prison? Is that a probationary period? I've never seen it worded like that.

First one had 7 years suspended. He will serve that on parole.

Norton had 9 years suspended

Eta: or it can be complicated. For example for a non violent offense in Louisiana at the moment, 'good time' law is for ever 4 months and 11 days equals to 1 year prison sentence and you serve the rest of the year out on parole.

So say a 3 year prison sentence for drug possession, you will do 12 months and 33 days
