I'm a below average pianist, guitarist, and drummer. Guitar is by far the hardest instrument I've ever picked up.

Played snare in middle school, that's about it. Once I got to high school I decided choir was the way to go. Sang in Schola at LSU, it was fun.

I've been a musician for 18 years. Drums are definitely my main instrument (I play an OCDP custom, see username) But I've also been playing guitar, piano, and bass for 12+ years. I've never had a music lesson, I play by ear. You get out of it what you put into it for sure.

That's how you get to that level. Those guys are obsessed.

Seems that way to me. But, I am talking about playing those songs note for note like the original artist. No shortcuts whatsoever.

And when on stage with the band, there's no sheet music to read. You've got to have it memorized. You've got to be able to play it with your eyes closed.

That level of proficiency takes a long time to develop.

All State 1st chair tuba in LA from 5th - 9th grades.
Then the HS band director made me choose between marching/symphony band & football. That was an easy decision.

I knew one. a famous guitarist. he holed up in his house stoned all day. his widow still sells his compositions and his recordings. famous people do covers.

He played with famous bands for decades after going to university for 4 years for classical.

You have to have the drive. He was a genius and he did the work.

Studying classical guitar at a university for four years is a damn good way to get better at guitar! Randy Rhoads was thinking about leaving Rock to study Classical full time. His death in that air crash intervened. He'd studied classical and it helped his playing.
