First of all, "life" does not necessarily mean intelligent. Secondly, they may be located across the Universe and may not possess the technology to get to us. We haven't gotten people much past our own moon so someone on another planet could be thinking the exact same thing you are thinking. I am not sure how we would know if there was life on other planets. We know there are literally TONS AND TONS of planets that could potentially harbor life similar to that on Earth and that is as good as it gets right now. Not knowing doesn't mean something doesn't exist.

If there are planets that are inhabited and we discover them it is impossible with current technology to travel there. We are probably 100 years away from developing spacecraft capable of reaching worlds just 5 light years away.
Remember, if you observe an object 1000 light years away, you are witnessing what happened 1000 years ago. If you could get there somehow, the object you observed will not look the same as what you will see.
