I had c3-c6 fused about 3 yrs ago. The majority of people that gets that surgery had great results. For me it didn't go well. Started showing symptoms thirty years ago but nobody could find out what was wrong. After I collapsed, they finally did a MRI on my neck. After the surgery, both arms were paralyzed for three months.

The Dr said I was born with a narrow spinal canel and he said he was trying to keep it from getting worse. I can use my arms now but will never be able to swing a golf ball. If anyone reading this is having bouts of syatica but told there is nothing wrong with your lower back, insist they check your neck.

I am only 54 but will never work again probably. I've been paying taxes since I was 12 working in the family business. And I miss working. Hope your friend has a successful surgery.

I had 5-6 several years ago. Pain free instantly. 12 weeks to fully recover but really was fine in 2 weeks. I'm close to having 4-5 done and also have some bone spurs to deal with.

I had one doctor try to sell me one. I went to get another opinion and the other doctor suggested a very simple discectomy. It was easy and I was out the hospital the same day. It took a month or two before I was running again.

Odds are my problem wasn’t as serious as your brothers, but I’d get a second opinion if he hasn’t.

Fusing them all between C2 and T3? Holy shite. Best of luck to him.

A C2-T3 is done from the back of the neck and not the front. They aren’t taking the disc out and fusing the bodies together like they do from the from. They going In from the back decompressing and decorticating a bunch of bone to relieve pressure off the spinal cord. Because they are having to take so much bone out they are putting screws and rods to stabilize them in place until they heal/fuse back. Timeline on these vary significantly more than from the front. How patients do vary from patient to patient but most patients have a good bit of pain for sometime after these posterior cervicals.

My wife’s fusion in March, she managed her pain well. Neck brace was, well, a pain in the neck. But, the surgery was well worth it…

This is the only person in this thread that knows what he is talking about.
How much rehab is needed after can vary depending on the individual and their condition. I will say posterior cervical fusions are more painful and have more wound issues compared with an anterior approach.

10 days ago, my son had rod and spinal fusion surgery at Shands in Gainesville (can't speak highly enough of the staff) after being in the hospital for weight traction (with a halo) since mid September. It's been a rough recovery (had a bout with sepsis and 2 blood clots after a 14 hour surgery) but he hasn't really struggled with pain. It's actually seems to be the issue that's caused the least amount of problems.

To any Gator fans, what a world class hospital you guys have here.
