Spam Calls Using Dead Relatives

My wife (no pics) lost her mom about 10 years ago. Recently she gets a ton of spam calls that specifically use her mom's name saying they're trying to get in touch with her.
Anyone else experience this? I'm used to the robodialers by now, but how in the world are they getting deceased relatives information?

My secretaries are trained to hang up swiftly and block all calls from those cretins.

i knew someone who lost a young child.........the following year when they filed their returns, the irs kicked them back saying the SSN for the child was already used. apparently you get a year or 2 to use the deceased child's ssn to claim them.........but other sickos out there beat them to it.

Did her mom have any unresolved things to take care of with your wife?
That could be why her spirit isn’t moving on to the afterlife

I’ve had recorded calls where they’ve asked about relatives, but not deceased ones. I think some data mining linked your mother-in-laws name to your wife’s name. Even though she’s been gone for ten years her name is still out there on the net. My grandfather has been gone nearly twenty years and he is still listed on some online phone directories.

that's lower than trying to get on your friend's mom during a sleep over

AI will drown us in spam before the killerbots ever get off the ground.

No. They're obvious spam overseas calls. At first my wife would ask "who is calling?" and they immediately would hang up.
About 2 weeks ago they started texting "Please call us immediately about [mom's name]." When you Google the number, it's on those spam lists.

My dad and another, unrelated man, were born a week apart in Louisiana and given very similar names. They were issued the same SSN and nobody ever noticed until they turned 65 and qualified for Social Security. It was a real shitshow getting it straightened out.

I think this is something a bit more worrisome if they are specifically targeting her like this. I think it would take some research to get this type of information.

Wouldn't there have been issues with stuff like credit and taxes long before that?

That is the most fricked up thing I have read today.

my Dad's been gone for 14 years, my Mom will get a call about once a year from someone that tells her they have a message from him, she never lets the conversation last very long, I told her the next time at least ask what the message is

Apparently it never showed up. My dad served in the military and apparently the other guy did not or it would have turned up then.

Sounds like someone that bought up old debt and is trying to collect on it.

the best part of it all is THEY had to provide the birth cert and death cert, and wait about 4 months......all the while, whoever stole that ssn just cashed in with zero proof.

It's definitely not that. A debt collector identifies themselves and says what they're calling about. These people are overseas and shady.
