An off-shore soft landing was within the scope of the licenses for IFT 5 and 6. It was actually expected on IFT5. Just like the Starship vehicle soft landed between the buoys with the cameras in the Indian Ocean, the Heavy booster soft landed at the predetermined location in the Gulf. I expect the remains of it to be recovered. The salvage ship used for the previous recoveries of the booster and staging ring, M/V Hos Ridgewind is in Fourchon, LA. If we see it start moving south in a few days, we will know what's up.

With all of that being said, IFT #7 will be an entirely new vehicle as it's a version 2. It's likely that they would still use the V1 booster to try the catching bit again. The FAA will want a new mission scope, but the fact that SapceX has been well within their predictions I don't think it will take too long for a license. If you parlay that with the fact that the new administration could gut the leadership at the FAA, I predict a kinder, gentler approach moving forward.

Apparently the FAA will NOT require a mishap investigation for Booster landing in the Gulf instead of the catch back at the launch site

Also... it seems SpaceX confirmed the abort of the catch attempt was caused by issues at the tower, not booster

That is good. The Booster looked controlled in the landing. Once Tower 2 is online, there will be options to catch in case of an issue on the one that launched. Assuming they do not have a 2nd rocket taking up space there like the animations always have it

I don’t understand any of this. All I know is SpaceX seems to be doing truly incredible work.
