some fields require a degree, or advanced degrees to enable you to move through a gate to advancement, that's about all I can see that they're good for, law school included, get the degree then learn how, through the study course, to take the bar, I've had several friends that needed to pick up a masters or PhD, in anything, to move up the food chain in their field that did so at Southern or Grambling
