There were a lot of people who worked their way through LSU at Southdowns

She was just telling, those of us who know Rodney, what a stressful time he was having. He has had a heart attack in the past and we all worry about him...though he is still pumping his bike around LSU lakes every morning.

Not going to matter. Unfortunately, if the owner thinks he can make a killing by bulldozing it, there is nothing that will change that.

Sunday morning he went to his desk to go through the books, etc. and found a registered letter from Donnie Jarreau Real Estate's lawyer informing him as of May 31, 2008, he was to be out building.
Every bit of a 30 day notice huh? WOW!

after paying rent for 40 years you would think they would owe him more than that. The man could have bought that center for the money he spent...looking back...he should have.

You make a good point. I have noticed they are really trying to make the shopping center really nice. Seems like they could just re-do that too.

They should move it to another location.

He would need to stay in the same area...they have a faithful following.

Don't have much data on that, but seems doubtful
Sure hate to see the demise of one of the last great neighborhood bars. Heard a lot of great live music and picked up more than a couple of live ones in that shopping center over the years...

Southdowns Lounge to close after 40 years
It wasn't long ago the Thirsty Tiger Tavern—reputed to be the city's oldest pub—was turned into a wine bar. Now Baton Rouge is losing another historic watering hole: Southdowns Lounge, located in the Southdowns Shopping Center on Perkins Road. Rodney Cary, the bar's owner, says he received a letter from property owner Donnie Jarreau Companies over the weekend saying the business had to be out by May 31. Sage Roberts, a spokeswoman for Jarreau, confirms the bar's lease has not been renewed. Cary, who has owned Southdowns for 40 years, says he's not sure what his next move will be. "I just opened that piece of mail on Sunday," Cary says. "We have no idea what we're going to do. We don't whether we'll move or sell everything in here." The Jarreau Companies’ Web site says it plans to renovate the 40-year-old, 58,000-square-foot shopping center into a "retail village”—complete with new landscaping, parking, facades and outdoor seating areas" for a "comfortable, neighborhood feel." The $1.5 million renovation, which Jarreau is undertaking with managing partner McCartle LLC of Naples, Fla., "is focusing on a new kind of tenant mix, and one that enhances the more community-centric feel," according to a Jarreau news release. The rear of the shopping center will be geared towards architects, interior designers, art and photography studios, and residential hardware retailers, according to the release.
