South America travel advice

Trying to plan a trip to Machu Picchu next year and then hopefully some wine and food tourism in one or two other countries.
Machu Picchu: looking for ANY advice/pointers from anyone who has been. I believe I understand that only a set amount of permits are issued for the park by the government per day...how far in advance do I need to get that in place? Which month would you recommend? How physically advanced is the climb up to Huyana Picchu?
I wanted to leave MP and go down to Santiago and then over to Mendoza. Nothing is set in stone, would appreciate and and all recs.

Haven't been, but when I was planning a trip I believe the passes don't open up until 6 months away? Huyana Picchu is a separate pass with even more limitations, so note that.
Starwood's Tambo Del Inka looks legit. They have their own train station to MP so that is convenient. Some people want to stay closer so they can get up to MP before the crowds, however the choice of accommodations at the base seem to be of less quality.
The other advice was to probably stay in Cusco a few days to acclimate to the altitude before heading to MP.
This trip is still high on my list, I got a few wonders to go. If you got any British Avios points you can get flights from Lima to Cusco on LAN for $5 and 4,500 points each way.

I have actually heard the opposite...supposedly since Cusco is 3K feet higher than MP, I've been advised to go straight to MP and get acclimated to the 8K there. That way when you go back to Cusco (at 11K) it isn't as much of a shock.

Ya, that is an option too, but that's a lot of travel in a day. Could always chew on some cocoa leaves like the locals.

I looked into it briefly earlier this year. I think you have to get the passes 3 months in advance if you want your pick of month. Pretty sure May and June fill up fast, I don't know if that is because they are the best time or just because I was looking in April.

May and June are heading into peak season and dry season, hence it gets tougher. Apparently peak is July - August.
Wet Season is in the winter (summer for them) months, Dec. to April.

Do a trail hike with a guide on the way to MP. They will handle passes. Inca Trail can get crowded so you should look into one of the others.
