As prices have dropped ever lower, smaller oil producing nations on precarious financial ground have regularly pushed their bigger brethren to stop pumping at record levels and help calm the markets.

Now, even the giants are joining the chorus, with Saudi Arabia and Russia on Tuesday calling for a coordinated effort to freeze production.

The plan, which also included Venezuela and Qatar, is a tentative sign that major oil producers are ready to cooperate. And it indicates how deeply prices have fallen, as Russia and Saudi Arabia have previously resisted tempering production.

But whether the plan actually goes anywhere — or is just chatter meant to bolster prices — is an open debate. The four countries said they would proceed only if others commit.

Wouldn't get your hopes up too much. They only agreed to a cap if all other producing countries agree also. Which is unlikely to happen with Iraq and Iran.

They are capping production but not reducing it. Pretty big difference.

You obviously missed the article today that stated talks failed. Brent Crude dropped again.

This. Iran is able to sell shitloads of oil for the first time in decades and they HATE the Saudis (Shia/Sunni stuff). Even if they agreed for whatever reason, there's no reason to expect them to stick with it.

Yep, if Iran doesn't agree to freeze production (which they won't because sanctions were just lifted) then OPEC and Russia definitely won't cap.

Oil will keep dropping baws.

And when will the prices fall for the rest of the consumer merchandise crap that claimed they had to raise cost to offset the high cost of transportation due to high gas prices?

I'm waiting for BK to bring back the $1 whoppers and McDonald's to bring back their 2 Big Mac's for $2 campaign.
