So I've been doing some research on a couple of my family members centered around the late 1800's and early 1900's. In this research I've scoured a lot of old newspapers, and realized how those old newspapers were their own form of social media.

I came across a handful of clippings about one family member I've been researching that was just saying she went out of town for the weekend to see her sister, or her sister came to town to visit her. One that said she took ill after church and didn't take visitors until the following Tuesday. In most of these papers, there was almost an entire page dedicated to these mundane reports on what the locals were up to.

Anyway, not really groundbreaking stuff, but I found it pretty interesting when juxtaposed to the constant bitching about social media today.

This still exists in my area. It's a weekly newspaper called "The Budget". Different Amish areas around the country send in letters to let other Amish areas know who did what and when

That's not surprising about the Amish.

A lot of these I've found were in major newspapers. Chicago Tribune, St Louis Dispatch, etc. Many were in the smaller town newspapers though as well. It has helped me plot a better timeline on this particular family member I've been trying to learn more about. She was quite the gallivant following her husband's death, mostly going to see her sister 100 miles away.

After her death we went through moms photo albums and found quite a few newspaper clippings of my Dad and other family members where they had killed a big deer or caught a big fish. I asked my uncle about them and he said that was very common years ago.

they still do this. I’ve been in a small town newspaper for a fish and I’m 25.

They were called the Social Pages. The newspaper was the dominant medium of the day.

Therefore pretty much social media.

I used to like reading the weekly arrest reports in my small towns paper. I always recognized half the names.

I found one that stated my grandfather, Mr. Milton StaPuffMarshy, was traveling into town one day for farming supplies by way of horse and carriage. As he exited the carriage, a horse broke loose from another carriage and proceeded to knock Mr Milton SPM flat on his backside in the middle of the town square. As Mr Milton SPM was not harmed, the crowd and he laughed heartily as his fortunate safety!!

And you fools complain about today's media

For sure. My prior exposure to it was more in the 50's and 60's when they'd chronicle actual dinner parties and such. Some of these entries were literally "Jane Doe of 123 Main St spent the weekend in Anytown at the home of her sister."

And it's a different feeling in you when it's your great great grandmother's random weekend in 1907 they're referencing.

because in general women are all about bragging and those social media posts of where they go and what they do .. they do all that because they are searching for happiness, they never find it .. nothing satisfies them .. even in the olden days. as you found op..

we Men on the other hand have a better understanding of ourselves .. we can enjoy the little things wether materialistic or spiritual ... a night at the gym or playing any other sport with your bros ... I played bball tonight for example... going out for a drink with them or some burgers or even maybe enjoying some TV or a video game ... and some guys like to travel too ... its just that we can enjoy the little things .. we can value the little things .. and that pisses them off beyond anything ... that is why you always see them trying to invade male only spaces or gatherings or even trying to ruin them from afar ... like joining fantasy sports when they don't know Jack crap about it.. it drives them insane that even if they travel the world they wont get the same satisfaction as a man doing any of these things.

really is just a reminder for all men out there from what I've been learning
