Watch Bill Maher's monologue -- he simply says something like "frick that dumbass Trump" and the audience applauds. They do not laugh -- they clap. This happens so much Maher even comments on it.
None of these programs are really comedy shows. They are closer to religious programs like the 700 Club, where the host preaches and the amen corner audience shouts hallelujah.
