Yes, it's a character flaw, nothing to do with gender. Plenty of men do this too. Chronic lying for no good reason might be a sign of a sociopath.
If it is so obvious, tactfully call her out in the moment and see what happens. Hopefully you will help him see the truth before she gets pregnant

I'm a catch, believe me, but even I caught mine cheating on me after a year together. Very pretty but had mental issues. I don't trust women anymore, frick it.

To be fair, I know dudes like this. One particular guy, he its second nature to him to lie to his wife, but that's because the first few years they dated, he was still acting like a single dude. But I guess he grew up, however; he will lie about going to the grocery store (maybe not that bad, but you get the point).
