I thought this article was interesting...it might be more appropriate for the Outdoors board, but thought it would have a wider readership here and might result in a few humorous replies. (Long article though, so ADHD types can skip.)
Why is it so hard to stop people dying from snakebite?

Article actually reads like Africa is a disaster. Shocking revelation btw.

I never knew that antivenom was created by injecting venom into other animals and then harvesting the antibodies created, although that certainly makes sense.

The fact that poor areas of Africa struggle with snakebite treatment shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

The actual issue is antivenom has to be refrigerated and expires over time. 3rd world countries are 3rd world because they can’t manage those sorts of logistics.

My cajun grandpa and great uncles as kids used to catch snakes and collect the venom via a mason jar and sell it to local doctors to use as anti-venom for like .25 cents to buy candy with. This was just after the great depression or something.

Yep, it's a long and tedious process, and without proper tools dangerous as all hell. If you've never seen some of the YouTube videos of people putting venom into pitri dishes of blood, I recommend it. It's crazy what a lot of them do and how fast it happens.

About 15 years back I had a neighbor who milked them in his front yard... encouraging the neighborhood kids to come watch. He has been on natgeo a few times, as he loved to tell anyone who'd listen. Crazy frick was missing a lot of index finger on one hand from a bite. Forgot what species caused that, but he had an array of poisonous snakes he worked with. Even wrote the/a book on the treatment of snakebite. Probably died 5-10 years ago, of old age shockingly. Easily my most interesting neighbor ever.
