It was a copperhead. They are known for this behavior. You probably either have a mud swallow nest up in your porch roof or there are mice. Yes copperheads are poisonous

A screen door to an out building my parents have was not closed all the way and a small rat snake evidently crawled up on top of the door. It was just luck that I opened the door and the snake fell in front of me. My wife or mother would have had a heart attack. The snake was caught, examined and released to scare someone another day.
