No doubt that Human factors were a cause. But don't forget that multiple mechanical failures occurred all due to humans deciding to continue to operate equipment knowing that the equipment had mechanical problems.

Frankly the oil spilled is not the environmental disaster some make it out to be

I caught shite for saying something along these lines a few months ago in the thread discussing the movie they want to make about the spill.

My belief is that unless you were in the circle of friends and family who lost loved ones that day, the spill was actually a boon for southeast LA. People made out like bandits from a financial standpoint all across the area. BP is also on the hook for significant reparations designed to fund costal restoration efforts and it can be argued they're paying far more than their fair share.

It was a disaster because of the loss of life, plain and simple. As unpopular as it may be to say, there was a significant silver lining for the rest of the area.

In a nutshell yes. They had plenty of chances to prevent this from happening but would have taken more time and money. A CBL and remedial cement job would have prevented it. Displacing directly to the supply vessel was another time saving measure that was often used by many operators. In this case it caused confusion on their displacement and contributed to them not detecting the kick before the gas had reached surface. Once the gas has reached surface it's usually game over. The Blow Out Preventer becomes a big weight on the bottom of the riser.

No doubt. Bad cement job (caused by mechanical issues) led to communication between the reservoir and the surface.

But all of that would have been detected (really was detected) in the negative pressure test that was ignored. It looks to me like groupthink and go fever set in at that point.

Is never a good idea. You've got to be able to monitor an influx of fluid. You are correct about the cement bond log as well.
