Paul Allen, God rest his soul, had a great quote about this. He was speaking in reference to us being able to upload our brains and some SV types bragging about being able to fundamentally reconstruct a brain, etc.
"Us trying to figure out how the mind works is like asking a blacksmith in medieval Europe what purpose a jet engine serves. Yes, he's a blacksmith but how on earth could he replicate all the technology, engineering, and, even if he could, he still has to build a plane to use the damn thing. This will never happen in our lifetimes."

The intelligence that will arise from AI research will be programmed by humans initially but it will be an alien intelligence. I'm not sure how we can anticipate how it will compare to human intelligence, consciousnesses, self awareness, morals etc..
