Signing your kid up for sports then quitting a few weeks later

My son (5) had a soccer game today and the game was almost called off because the opposing team didn't have enough players. Why even sign your kid up if you're just going to let him/her quit after a few weeks? I understand your kid might not completely like the sport but at least make them finish the season. 1) you're basically teaching them it's ok to be a quitter, and 2) it's pretty unfair to the other kids who show up.

Could also be that the parents got butthurt by coaching decisions and pulled their kids in retaliation.

So you know they quit or the kids on the other team (who you don't know) could have been out of town, had a death in the family, been sick, etc, etc?
Great thread. Very thoughtful.

Stop being a dumbass. Every team had dwindling numbers since about week 3, including ours.

I coach two young teams. I wish half our players would quit so I don’t have th play them.
But, if your parents signed you up for this, I’m dragging your arse on the field by your collar if I have to.

Maybe don't take soccer for 5 year olds so seriously. They probably had other shite to do since they're 5 and all.

I have been hearing this for 50 years, and it has never made any sense.
Why would you want someone on the team that doesn't like the sport, and will have little motivation, that is not fair to the other players?
Why make a kid waste his free time on something he is not interested in, let him be free try other things, and possibly find something he enjoys?

It’s people like you I hate. My son isn’t athletic but he loves to play basketball. We put him on a team, 6 to 8 year olds, when he was younger to learn fundamentals. He barely got playing time and was ignored because a frick like you wanted to “win”. They are kids. Let them all play and have fun while learning the game.

You’ve already established he isn’t good at it, so what’s the point of “learning the game” any more?
You are wasting precious time.
Almost everyone is good at *something*. Instead of wasting your/his/everyone else’s time and making him think he’s worthless, you should be encouraging him to try other things.
Maybe he’s a great painter or rock climber or race car driver or swimmer or drummer. You’ll never know because you are busy forcing him to play the sport YOU want him to learn.
The best thing I ever did was quit football and focus on cross country. I was district champion and competed in the state meet twice. The guys who “stuck it out” in football despite not having the body or talent for it eventually got to be on the varsity team as seniors, play for one pity snap, and experience a magical 1 win season. What a waste. Find what your kid is actually talented at and do that instead. I wish to God my parents had.

I hope my 5 year old wants to quit before it gets too damn cold out there.

I agree with OP that if the kid commits to playing for a team/sport he should finish the season. There is value in learning to finish what you start, being dependable, etc doing things you don't like.
That doesn't mean he has to keep playing it until he graduates high school. You move on and try another sport or hobby.

Teams for little kids, especially like 5 year olds, are for learning and having fun. A kid that has no clue at 5 might turn into a star at 10 or so but only if he is given a chance early. At that age winning means nothing. Actually kids sports should always be about learning and fun. Kids mature at different rates. Star at 10, to just another kid at 15.

You coach for your ego. And what qualifies you to be a coach?

Having coached many soccer games I can tell you that the parents are a mess. My kid is not a very good player but he likes it so we do it.
