My army infantry unit shared an area of operations in Northern I Corps just south of the DMZ with 3rd Marine Div units in 1969. Some of the marines said they had to deal with them. I never saw them (our mortar guys did have a pet spider monkey), but the impression I got was that those “rock apes” were colonies of smallish simians of some sort who lived in the surrounding mountains and hills.

I think I remember something about rock apes mentioned offhand in "Nam,' by Al Santoli (if I recall author correctly.) Haven't read Chickenhawk or its sequel in a very long time. May have to look it up again.

My dads friend who was in Vietnam talked about them. Said they would drop objects on them from the trees. Said they also killed a few. Said troops would put rocks and such in empty c-rat cans and attach them to the concertina wire around the perimeter so if the wire was messed with the cans would rattle and make a noise. Well sometimes the "rock apes" would get in the wire and make noise and they got smoked because if it was night time and knew anyone outside the wire was a bad guy so if they heard a noise they just lit the place up. Would come morning time and there would be dead "rock apes" out there.

I'm sure they were just monkeys that the troops called rock apes.

Remember a guy at LSU working data/com had a war story about apes at night hurling large stones into his perimeter and injuring some troopers during a patrol.

I can't recall his name but are you talking about a big fella who also taught Computer Science courses(intro to C) in 1996 time frame? Our instructor was a Vietnam Vet with some incredible stories.

A Lieutenant whom I went to OCS with (ended up standing in his wedding) had a 1SG dad who swore he saw them in Nam. He was a scary man and I believe him.

Rock Apes? Are these even real?

Neanderthals. I remember my Dad telling me the Central Highlands was one of the scariest and weirdest places on the planet. You could get eaten, bit, booby trapped, and your head cut off at any givin time.

I bet Si Robertson saw one. Probably took a shot at it, too.

The fellow I recall worked with LSU Information Services and knew where every pair of copper cable terminated, where large trunk cables lurked that had available unused capacity to feed new construction-physical plant sort of stuff. He intimidated architects and engineers and had some hard edges but I always got along well with him.
