Guess i'm biased but they are truly a great breed for families! Loyal and protective, but will pass a fart that will run you out of the room!

Well then you have my blessing.

Good friend of mine had an Alaskan Malimut in Baton Rouge. Dog always looked miserable in the heat but was a cool dog. He eventually moved to Colorado and the dog supposedly loved it there much better.

I have a 9 year old male husky who I’ve had since he was 6 weeks old. Great family pet, stays indoors unless I take him out to exercise together, doesn’t destroy anything. But dogs must be crate trained if you want one that won’t go inside, which means the pup is going to have to live inside for ~6 months regardless.

They have a chewing phase and if left alone or unattended will chew wood furniture (mine chewed a couple items, stopped around 1 year).

They will escape and must be kept on leashes at all times.

You’re an a-hole for leaving a husky outside all day to lay in the shade.

You’re an a-hole for leaving a husky outside so that it can find a multitude of ways to escape your yard, namely digging or scaling the fence, and get hit by a car, etc. They do not have a homing mechanism and can’t find their way home in most cases.

It sounds to me like you don’t want a companion but a lawn ornament. Get a pit bull instead

THAT IS SOOOOOOO TRUE!!!!! OMG!!!! I thought it was just theirs! They had one in particular that did this ALL. THE. TIME. You'd hear her let one (they were pretty audible), and she'd lift her head and look around to see if anyone noticed. Damn they were rancid!

Then get a boxer if that’s what she wants. If she is home all the time then she will be taking care of a puppy more than you. It may not be the dog you want but it would be the easiest path to take to get a dog. They are great dogs at least.

Get ready for the big shed. These dogs shed boatloads of hair.

Funny thing, my in-laws had three boxers at once before they eventually all died of age, but two of them were named Missy and Maggie. Maggie was the farter.

Well, you started out with good advice. Based on the above, you need to go back and re-read what I've said.

No, we both work and I'm the one that does everything. Feeding, playing, buying food, vet visits, etc. She handles the kids in the morning. I have the dog duties. I'm okay with that trade-off, but I've made it clear that if I'm doing most of the work, I've got final say on what we get or if we even do. Not saying no to a boxer necessarily, just not giving in yet.I'm not going out of my way, but if I visit a shelter and that's what I happen to connect with, who knows.

Question, are German shepherds similar to that? We saw someone on Facebook last night that has a 1-year-old one that they are moving and can't take with them.

Do you make it a habit to run your mouth about things you know nothing about or was this an isolated incident?

This is the big reason for not keeping them inside. It's why our last wasn't allowed in (his hair was like porcupine needles and stuck into everything). I know they have two times per year where they are really bad. Outside of that, from what I've gathered, it's pretty normal as compared to other dogs.

Dude if you live in the South and you plan on keeping the Husky outside, you're a cruel idiot for buying one.

IF I got one, it wouldn't be outside exclusively.

And you clearly know nothing about huskies and how their coats work. You're making assumptions based on what you *think* their coat does.

Because that’s where dogs belong? Or do we move in the rest of livestock, and we move outside?

The main thing you need to know is that huskies are escape artists. You need a large yard with a TALL fence. We had a 7" fence and she would climb over it. She would also dig under it. Huskies are very active and need a lot of attention and if they are left alone outside by themselves, they WILL find a way to escape. If you can't keep the dog inside, don't get one. Finally I had to give mine away to a woman who had two other large dogs for her to play with as well as an electrified fence so that she couldn't escape. Do NOT ever shave the dog's coat. You might think that due to the heat the dog is hot, but the way their coat is layered it actually serves as a cooling system. If you shave the dog's coat it messes its natural cooling system up.

Whether you are home or not your Husky needs to stay cool. In hot environments that might mean a room that is cooled or air conditioned, or at least very well insulated from the heat. It is probably not enough to leave a Husky in a shaded area if that is only marginally cooler than a sunny area. Take the hint: if your dog howls to be let inside to where it is cooler then that could be a sign he or she is too hot outside.

From googling, it looks like plenty people have huskies in hot weather, but there’s no magical cooling system from the thick fur. They need plenty shade at least.

Shed like a MFer

most Husky breeds go through a twice a year event called molting where they essentially completely shed 1 of their double coats

I guess this could be worse if you're putting a cold weather dog in a tropical environment
