How much more expensive are the million dollar civil suits to the tax paying public?
You forget that the money paid out from lawsuits doesn't come from the police budget, but from the municipality. It's not like the police feel the sting from lawsuits- it's the taxpayers. As long as the taxpayers continue to accept higher taxes to support their police, nothing's going to change. The popo are playing with house money.

The child should be awarded the cop's pension on top of a lifetime payment from the city of 10k per month.

If this cop actually went back to work then he is a POS. He should find another career that doesn't involve weapons

She had just got out of jail for domestic violence and she was already beating her husband again. She was obviously crazy

So she deserved to die
Of course not. She deserved to get help for her obvious mental illness. She probably should've been getting a mental evaluation in some lulu bin for her bi-polarness

This is a messed up story all around. I don't think the cop should be in jail at all.
Plus it's black on white "crime" so the media DGAF

It was an accident, a horrible accident. If I were the cop I would quit the force and never pick up a handgun again.

Black cop, white woman... The media really doesn't care....

Grown arse men afraid of family pets, it's embarrassing.

I know a lot of black cops, many of whom don't like dogs and/or are afraid of dogs.
Then they shouldn't be cops.

Criminal charges aside, why don't police departments view this acts as those of someone unfit for duty? I couldn't imagine screwing up this badly on my job and being able to continue as if nothing had happened.
Seriously.
If I made a mistake of this magnitude at my job, I'd be escorted off the property I think.

If your foot slips off the brake and you kill somebody while driving, you are going to jail.

What?
Sure, under certain circumstances, but if you weren't negligent (drunk, texting), you're probably not getting charged with anything.

I don't think he should be in jail, but I also don't think he should be a cop.

Money. It's expensive to train a police officer. It's not always as simple as firing someone when you have that kind of money wrapped up in a single employee and lack the ability to hire an applicant.
He didn't misuse department property, he killed a human being.
