I'm aware of that. And actually I'm describing someone not having auto insurance.

But that is completely irrelevant. The point of my post was the "they couldn't afford it" defense is bullshite.

So they can't afford it... How do they buy it? Raise their pay rates to offset the cost of the required insurance? Or make them sell pot on the side?

Can municipalities afford to continue to pay millions of dollars in settlements and lawsuits?

I'd think it'd be cheaper then trying to increase each po po's pay to cover individual policies. I'm just talking from a dollars and cents stand point. I would think a municipality would be able to negotiate a much better rate to cover the entire pool of po pos.

You want individual responsibility... I get that but, it'd take an enormous paradigm shift to do so.

I really don't want someone who might have to protect me one day worrying about what sort of hit it could make on their premium.

Im not so sure about that but you should be able to hold them personally liable and sue them for everything they have if they ruin your life unjustly.

If a teacher driving without car insurance is at fault in a car accident that seriously injures another driver, does the teacher get to just say 'sorry, can't afford it' when the injured party sues him for medical expenses and damage?

If they really can't afford it, then yeah they can pretty much say that. Minimum liability pays like 30K in LA and then anything above that the person hurt is SOL if offender declares bankruptcy.

In many if these incidents officers bear no personal responsibility, are placed on paid leave, and often return to their jobs as normal.

One of our troopers shot and killed a P&P officer in a training exercise. He's still on the job.

The average salary in Louisiana is 37K.

Wasn't there a big article in the paper recently about the highest paid people in the local government being police officers, particularly DUI cops that were working a lot of OT?

The 37K stat seems unrealistic to me when you consider all pay.

What do you think is running thru your surgeons head when you're lying on the operating table

A surgeon, that has had years of schooling and training, isn't in the same ballfield as a position that only requires a GED.

Nobody would be a police officer if they were personally liable to some lying sack of shite criminal.

This is a low paying, high risk job. Who would do this job? You?

Maybe we could start with the, "still on the job" part while under investigation? That's not too unreasonable?

Don't confuse the po po on this board with facts.

The truth is that they are against any increase in accountability for their actions. That threatens what it means to be a cop in their eyes. They are the law. And why not love that job? Its the only profession where you get a badge and a gun and the public will bend a knee to you.

Meh one wrong move by either of these individuals and you're dead but I get what you're saying.

I'm an advocate of "helping" professions doctors, teachers, social workers, police, ect. Having oversight helps them just as much as it does those they serve. It provides them support against false accusations and other unwarranted threats.

16 hours a day everyday?!?! That's a friggin safety hazard. They won't let you do it for too long in a refinery... They shouldn't allow it of police either.

In 2013, Reech made a total of $190,943 -- $61,425 of that as his base salary, and $129,518 in overtime, according to city-parish data. In 2012, Reech racked up 1,139 overtime hours, earning about $53,650 in extra pay on top of his $59,714 salary. This year, by August, he was already up to more than 1,700 overtime hours, totaling more than $85,000 in extra pay.

How did this even happen? There's usually some guy who counts every paperclip in most departments. No one said, "hey dude save some for everyone else"
