As someone who played catcher for years in baseball there are lots of ways you can make a play and not block the runner. There are also lots of things you can do to legally block/impede the path of the runner.
However in rec ball, things are a bit different. Co-Ed no contact - period. Mens league ... toss up.
If there is a play then the runner should slide or adjust to the point where no major contact is made. If contact is made as long as its not the lowering the shoulder and trying to knock the ball loose I'm okay with it.
If there isn't a play at the plate -- the catcher is just impeding and being a dick ... well ... :)

No because most of these people have to go to work and don't need to be on sick leave or fired

I received my first stitches at about 28 after a collision with some goofball old man guarding home plate in softball.
So no, in my biased view, there should be no collisions at home plate in freaking recreational softball. Many of those people are not athletes or even former competitive level baseball players.
We solved that problem in one of my leagues by outlawing slides and having a point near home plate that you had to pass before the catcher caught the ball or you were automatically out.

Had a guy run over our girl on 2nd base one night. He was running in and she was waiting to make the tag. He never checked up and ran straight into her causing her to drop the ball and ump ruled him safe.
Next batter hit a dribbler and I was playing 3rd. He came running at me to do the same thing. I dropped my shoulder right into his chest and put him on his arse. Needless to say, he didn't try that crap again next time he came up to bat.
It's Co-rec softball, we are there to have fun. If someone is blocking the base, you'll usually have time to go around or slide in. 9 times out of 10, the ump will rule in the runners favor on these if the base is being blocked and the runner attempts to avoid contact. If runner comes in hot and wants to run over a girl, they better be ready for what's coming to them.

slow pitch recreational softball league where the catcher is not wearing pads of any kind
maybe he'll bring some equipment next time.

Dude, It's recreational slow pitch. Stop midway down the line and walk over to your beer assistant and ask for a cold one. Don't bust your arse and be laid up for a week collecting Afflack for that shite. It's not worth it.

Some people take it very seriously. I played on a Class C team that was made up of some guys who won the national championship one year. It was extremely competitive and loaded with ex HS and college athletes.

I play true recreational basketball. We do not knock each other down. We play outside on summer evenings. It is fun. We had one guy who actually played in the NBA and some college guys and many HS players. Nobody takes it too serious, but we do try to win the game. We set the teams very evenly and everybody gets court time. It's recreation and fellowship. We drink a lot of lemonade and shoot a ton of 3's. It is a blast.
No pushing from behind. No hard hacks. Don't sweep the leg.

Shotgunning the pitcher was a big part of my game when I played. The only times I wouldn't do it was church league and the pitcher obviously had a physical ailment.
