Interesting

Shell, one of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies, has backed calls for the UK to bring forward its 2040 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales.

Ben van Beurden, chief executive of the Anglo-Dutch group, said he welcomed the idea of bringing forward the ban, as it would provide clarity and make it easier for companies like Shell to make investment decisions and also shift consumer attitudes.

Oil companies arent oil companies. They are energy companies. They wont cease to exist when most cars arent running on gas.

Always thought it hilarious that people think huge mega corporations like Shell and Exxon are gonna be like "Welp we had a good run" instead of investing in alternative energy

There are few other places that that kind of capital and energy experience would come from. The big boys will just slowly unload properties to companies that demand a lower return and put that money where the profits are to be made. They already do this amongst the different O&G plays. It’s no different to shift that investment to whatever energy source is going to power all of that.

Exactly. You don’t get to where they’re at by being complacent. Exxon has invested billions in their R&D division, I suspect the other majors have as well.

Makes sense - assuming this doesn't ban the refinement of other oil based materials like plastics.

Almost all vehicles will be electric by 2040. May as well get out in front of it.

Yes it is just cars. Literally the first sentence of the article:
