This. One location has to have one safety man, but that's it. The safety men I have seen have years and years of service. The young ones with no real location to call their own are the ones typically let go during slow downs.

An engineer friend in Houston almost got screwed by this. Still relatively young, around mid to late 40s, and he is just 4 years from retirement with full benefits. Been with Shell for around 20 years. They were about to let him go, and he offered to take a job in Russia to stay on. They finally found him a spot in New Orleans, so he's moving back here while his family stays in Houston so the kids can finish school. Can't imagine how much it would have sucked if they let him go.

Same here. I'm enjoying my unemployment and summer before I decide what I'm gonna do. I do have an opportunity with an operator Monday. See how that goes.

This is definitely not true in the few refineries I have been around. We have to have so many safety personnel depending on how many people we have working in the plant. This past turnaround we had 8 safety people (for a 1,500+ headcount which was just our group and not the whole refinery) plus the safety people that the construction contractors had (another 10+ for the same headcount).
I don't see refineries cutting back on their safety people like another poster said (safety are the first to go). Safety is so ingrained into refineries/oil work now that it isn't going away.
The only way safety people will not have work is if the work slows down at these refineries which is happening now. But they will still need safety people regardless.

Your friend lied to you or these details are way off. No way he's close to full benefits at retirement. He'd need 30 years or be 10 years old than you say.

I laid off two people today and have to let two more go. Economics. I can get more experienced people who commanded a higher wage 6 months ago for less than the people I let go.
Either I give the speech and cut my costs or I receive the speech and go on the unemployment line. Simple as that.
