Do you realize that Bruce Lee was named #15 on the Sports Illustrated 50 Greatest Athletes of all-time?

Sometimes, the things said on this board almost knock me out of my chair. But you, my friend, took it to a whole nuther level.

Great marketing goes a LONG way. I guess he was the greatest athlete never to compete in an athletic competition. You should know SI is a worthless rag.

he was 135 at the beginning of this thread, then 145, now 160.

He was a gym rat and his weight did fluctuate a bit. I don't know about 160, but his weight ranged between mid 130s and about 150 (maybe a bit more) - his prime physical condition was about 145lbs.

Let's just call him 5 feet, 7 inches, and an extremely solid 145 pounds to avoid the weight argument becoming a distraction.

Today? Tyson by a mile. (Granted the unfair advantage of biological animation.)

In their primes? Tyson....whoever argues otherwise is not drunk, but mentally handicapped.

It was his life's work, his profession, his vocation and his hobby. Even as a youngster, boxing was just Tyson's life.

FIFY. Once again we have to go back to the only reason he was discovered is because he was kicking the shite out of grown men as a youth. Each of their arts was their lifes work. If Bruce Lee was still around he would have fizzled out just the same just with a lot more respect.

While I think calling him a non-athlete is ridiculous, he never competed. I wouldn't put him on any best athlete list.

Isn't competition required to make one an athlete/competitor?

Competition isn't required to be an athlete.

ath·lete
noun \'ath-?let, ÷'a-th?-?let\

: a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength

Oh yeah....everyone knows that when it comes to analyzing athleticism, the staff and writers of SI are trumped by DanTiger from tigerdroppings.

Good lord, I don't even know what to say.....just goes to show you the inflated opinion people have of themselves in here.

It's just an all out no rules fight right?

All Tyson has to do is tackle him, Bruce Lee wasn't a ghost and Mike Tyson isn't the rock dude from Fantastic Four. Tyson would be able to get a hand on him, grab him, and throw him on the ground and pummel him

ETA: Bruce Lee would be smart enough to not participate in this fight

I guess he was good at karate but we only saw snippets of this at exhibitions and in his movies. This doesn't make him a great athlete in my book.

To be fair, Tyson was a supreme physical specimen himself, although he matured very quickly - at 20 years old:

ETA: After knocking down Trevor Berbick 3 times with 1 punch. (My favorite fight ending, ever.)

Yeah, I'll pass along to Sports Illustrated that boom roasted from tigerdoppings wouldn't put him on that list. I'm sure they'll immediately reconsider and replace him with someone that fits your standards.

I wouldn't put him on any "best athlete of all time" list. You have to test your skills against others to get on that list.

I do agree with this. I think top fifty is a reach however in the same breath what he did was amazing and does deserve being recognized at the best of his field.

SI writes articles to sell copy. That is one writers opinion that likely grew up in the same era as me and drank the Bruce Lee cool-aid.

Take it up with Sports Illustrated. I'm just passing along facts in response to the statement made that Bruce Lee is NOT AN ATHLETE. (see DanTiger)

I don't really give a shite about their list. I just said that, personally, I wouldn't put him on any best athlete list.

Taking this a bit personally, are we?

A SI opinion piece does not make it fact.

Good grief. You don't even know how these rankings work, do you? It's not one writer. It's made up of votes cast by a vast array of sports journalists.
