Walk. You can't buy tacos and hookers on a stupid little sailboat. With one gun, you can steal more bullets or another gun

You aren't making it across the gulf in that boat. Four ft seas would swamp that thing

Supplies: Unlimited drinking water and a pistol with 10 rounds, GPS.
If that is it then walking
You cannot sail an open body of water without a compass and sextant
Without getting a proper fix on your location, you'll never reach your destiantion and will eventually starve.
I'm taking the "no hugging the coast" rule seriously.

Walking. I'm dressing like a bum so I don't attract attention and my Spanish is decent enough to get me what I'd need.

I'm walking, have next to 0% chance of making it alive sailing.

If walking, can you hitch-hike along the way, or does it have to be 100% on foot?

Not sure. He was back in town shortly after.
"I thought you were on the Caribean?"
"My boat sank."
I thought it best not to inquire further.

Walking thru Mexico with only 10 rounds? No chance of survival.
Sailing straightline across the gulf with "no experience on the open water"? VERY little chance of survival but at least it is a chance.
That said, you say unlimited water and a pistol as supplies. While the pistol would be limited in value on the water (unless you run across pirates), what about food? Both excursions are going to many days. I assume you meant "unlimited food and water" for this hypothetical situation.

Unlimited drinking water and 10 bullets aren't gonna do shite when you hit 10' waves in that Mickey Mouse operation of a sailboat you posted.
Captain Bligh could get you there. But again you need extreme seafaring expertise and decent instruments.
quote:
The mutineers ordered Bligh, two midshipmen, the surgeon's mate (Ledward), and the ship's clerk into the ship's boat. Several more men voluntarily joined Bligh rather than remain aboard. Bligh and his men sailed the open boat 30 nautical miles (56 km) to Tofua in search of supplies, but were forced to flee after attacks by hostile natives resulted in the death of one of the men. Bligh then undertook an arduous journey to the Dutch settlement of Coupang, located over 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 km) from Tofua. He safely landed there 47 days later, having lost no men during the voyage except the one killed on Tofua

Millions of Mexicans somehow manage to survive there with 0 rounds and 0 guns. I’ll take my chances being one of those rather than think I can navigate open water in a shitty boat and somehow end up in Cancun.

I could make it on foot, but sailing is the answer...
You can catch and eat fish...
But to be fair, humans are generally good to each other in small groups...
And there are less problems in Mexico once you get away from the border...but it would take about 100 days on foot, a third or less that sailing...
Also, I'd start after hurricane season...so october

Not sailing per se, but I had a friend that bought a Laffite skiff in the Grand Isle area one summer. He wanted to get it down to one of the bay islands of Honduras. Utila is where he has a dive shop and he wanted to convert the skiff to a dive boat.
After checking on the price of getting the boat cradled and shipped down there, he thought he could save the money and sail it to Utila with another friend.
It was June if I remember correctly. He left from Grand Isle, and headed straight across the gulf like the OP states. He got into some bad weather with high seas and turned back after a day. He got swept eastward during the ordeal and made landfall in Biloxi. He called me and told me what happened and wanted me to check the weather reports so he could try again. This was in the days before radar apps on cell phones. Anyway, he waited a day or so until the weather looked more promising, and headed out to Utila. Once again after a day or so, he got into a storm and this time barely got out without sinking the skiff and probably dying in the process.
Once again the storm had swept him far eastward and he made landfall in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama. Home of the Bubba Gump Shrimp co. He said he was done and would never try something that stupid again, and talked me into driving over and bringing him back to Baton Rouge. He paid a shipping firm to cradle and put his skiff on a ship and deliver it to Honduras.
TLDR sailing across the gulf in a small craft is a very stupid idea, but so is walking to Cancun. Where do you people come up with dumbass ideas like this?

Leave the gun at home.

And that dude lives in baton rouge. Probably a much better chance of getting shot in BR than Cancun.
