I think that would be a parasitic fungus.

Something like this one that targets flies, particularly houseflies:


I saw several different fly species back in the Spring affected by this fungus. There are also similar types that target grasshoppers, not to feed on them, but to invade their brains and nervous systems to drive them to water, forcing them to dive in where they are eaten by the ultimate species the fungus targets and requires for reproduction.

Parasitic fungi are legit nightmare fuel.
