Serious question ... Was the pay great when you joined NOFD? Or has it always been "alarmingly low"?

I'm 56 years old and when I was in the Boy Scouts a father in my troop was a firefighter and drove a cab on his off days. I was about 11 or 12 years old and thought that was fricked up. I felt bad for the guy, but I knew then that firefighters weren't being paid that well.

I have a friend from college who is on NOFD. That guy has his own side business and does pretty well for himself. He works his business on his off NOFD days and lifts weights, eats lasagna, plays cards and naps at the fire house. I guess he probably does some fireman kind of shite too, but I rarely hear about that.

I know NOFD has been jerked around on their retirement/pension lawsuit for about 25 years, but why does anyone every join if it's such a shitty job?
