The reason is every time we dry, literally tens of millions of skin cells are left in the damp towel. The towel holds moisture, flesh cells rot, decompose, or whatever... causing musky odors and whatever bacteria rotten flesh brings. Personally I'm with you, my towels hang up wet, rotting flesh and all and are used until I have nothing better to do but wash clothes. Just giving a reason why many people wash once used towels.
