Science break: the force required to split two protons is 5,620 pounds.

That is A LOT of force to "split an atom" especially when the mass of a proton is only 1.6726219236951×10e-27 kg.
Here is a chart of the strong nuclear force between protons/neutrons from wiki:
When the atom is stable the nucleons exert no force on each other as they spin in harmony. But to separate the nucleons in a fission reaction it take 25,000 newtons of force (5620 pounds) to separate them. Note "fm" is a femtometer and that is 10e-15 meters.
This should give you an idea of why nuclear bombs are so destructive and why nuclear power plants can produce so much energy with relatively a small amounts of material. There is a lot of energy stored in the nucleus of an atom.

It would only take 235 lbs to split Hillary Duffs protons!!!

Only in seafood gumbo. Shrimp, crab and okra go well together.

pounds is a poor descriptor of force. either you or wiki should retract

I used newtons in the OP but used pounds in the title because most Americans do not have a "feel" for a newton. I'm comfortable with any unit of measurement.

That’s nothing. Guys on the HF board can bench half that at least.

The guy over at Action Lab YT channel presents a really good analogy for the strong nuclear force at a macro level call polarity free magnetic propulsion. Good video if you want to develop a decent analogous mental image of of the strong nuclear force.

Nope, still don't understand. But then I don't understand how TV signals travel through the air and come out looking normal on my TV.

Did you know you can hold a piece of enriched uranium or plutonium in your bare hand with no ill effects?
