HOUSTON – Oil field services firm Schlumberger announced Thursday it plans to ax another 11,000 workers, kicking off what could be a second major wave of layoffs across the oil industry.

The move will bring Schlumberger’s layoffs up to 20,000 employees, roughly 15 percent of its workforce, since it began paring back its payroll earlier this year to cope with low oil prices. The nine-month oil slump has cost the energy industry more than 120,000 jobs so far, according to oil field staffing firm Swift Worldwide Resources.

Isn't it a terrible working environment to begin with?

SLB takes care of their own. Higher safety standards than much of the industry too

Damnit.

It's still early into this deal and we're already seeing some pretty big swings taken.

I find this odd.

I'm a soon to be grad and I was just offered a job by SLB for the D&M Segment. I turned it down because the job wouldn't begin until Q3 (August/September). Are they possibly pushing older employees out the door? Why are they still hiring grads if they've had to lay off 11,000 twice now?

What is wrong with people? Why would someone up vote thousands of people losing their job?

All of the big companies are still hiring grads. They have to. If they quit hiring grads they will completely frick up the education system down here. PETE wouldn't recover any time soon from loosing shitloads of students to other fields. When it gets back good (and eventually it will) they wouldn't have any young cheap talent available.

Apparently they've already fired most of the people they wanted gone and now the "underperformers" with seniority are getting hacked. That's 2nd hand information though so im not sure how accurate it is.

No, I'd never work for that organization. I just find it sad that anyone would take joy in someone else's misery.
