Was it sernitz(sp)? All of my Croat friends love that and usually add smeche(sp) in front which means trash.

No, but that could likely be a mainland version. My peeps were from the Dalmatian islands, so their word for it was chudna (sp?). I asked a friend in college (who was a Croatian basketball player) about it and he said the literal translation of chudna to English means "strange".
