I was artillery when I was in shooting the 155mm M198 and we used it many times in OIF I. It was always for a smoke screen and to mark a target or so we were told. I have seen what it does to stuff (never a human) and it is not a good thing.

There is nothing truly productive that we can do, except support those within Islam who wish to reform.
(Other than the already noted decimation of their supplies and organizational tools).

Well most of the Muslim world is pretty fricking tired of ISIL too. Get buy-in from surrounding Middle Eastern countries to annihilate ISIL and make a deal they can split up the territory when its over.

You're right. They want to die. And they want to die for their god. And it comes down to one thing. Look at all successful empires across history. What did they do while conquering?

Not that "we" (in some collective western sense) should be wanting to create an empire...but it's a threat to western civilization that has been brewing for hundreds of years.
Only a fool would think it wouldn't rear its ugly head again.
There are too many young men without purpose in that region.
That ALWAYS equals one of two things in the end. Building incredible things, or war.

I use Christian there in the cultural sense. I'm not religious myself. But you can't deny that there a separate Western or "Christian" cultural world and a Muslim cultural world and those two 'worlds" are incompatible.

The Japanese might have used similar tactics, but the motivations and beliefs are completely different. To compare the two is to miss details that describe what beliefs are motivating the behaviors. From what I've gathered, the Japanese were glorified by their community. The Jihadists believe they are rewarded by god. They will not stop in the face of death.
