The Pentagon has identified eight staging areas in Russia where large numbers of military forces appear to be preparing for incursions into Ukraine, according to U.S. defense officials.

As many as 40,000 Russian troops, including tanks, armored vehicles, and air force units, are now arrayed along Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia.

Additionally, large numbers of Russian military forces will conduct exercises in the coming days that Pentagon officials say could be used as cover for an attack on Ukraine.

quote:

Phillip Karber, a former U.S. arms control official who has traveled extensively in Ukraine war zones, identified several new military units at the eight locations, including up to two brigades of the newly established Russian First Guards Tank Army at Yelnya and Klintsy in the north, elements of the 20th Army located to the south of those units, and forces from the 49th Army deployed further south near Rostov.

“The fact that a full scale Russian invasion is still a plausible scenario after 30 months of conflict is an abject repudiation of an American policy of ‘leading from behind’ and West European fetish for trying to find ‘off-ramps’ that Putin hasn’t the slightest interest in taking,” said Karber, now head of the Potomac Foundation.

I would not be surprised in the least if Putin launches a full scale invasion into Ukraine before the end of the month. I'm not going to go so far and say he's going to do it, just that I'd not be surprised if he did.

Check out the documentary "Polite People" on Amazon. It's about people traveling from all over the world to help Russia fight in the Ukraine. It's pretty interesting.

Would be a smart move if he did because Nero is still fiddling right now.

We have problems at home. Let him do whatever he wants over there. We don't have the time or resources to deal with that bullshite.

What is his love with the Ukraine, is it a monetary deal or they have natural resources he wants?

Obama better hurry up quick and draw a redline around the Ukraine.

I wouldn't be surprised, either. There isn't anyone capable of stopping such a thing. At one time we could have, but no more.

There are a few issues.

1. Crimea is an extremely strategic location on the Black Sea

2. Ukraine made a mob-esque deal with Moscow for natural gas and it's time to collect.

3. Putin is trying to flex nuts to show the world Russia is still powerful and should be feared (and he's doing it in an area where many citizens are pro-Russia, so he's hoping that will play to his advantage so Russia is seen as a "liberation force").

I'm wondering if this is posturing for the US/Russo talks on Syria.

Putin trying to show he is in a position of strength and can handle both crises simultaneously

Two things.

1. Ukraine is traditionally part of both Russia and the old Soviet Union.

2. Ukraine is packed with both natural resources and some of the most fertile farmland on the planet.

Possibly. I also wonder if he is doing this before the up-coming elections. Maybe he feels that since Trump wants to rebuild the military that the apple is ripe for picking now, given how much this administration screwed it up.

In this case, that's a good thing. Why should we try and stop this?

Would do no good. Even if Obama wanted to try and stop Putin from taking back Ukraine short of nuclear war, there's nothing we can do to stop him. Putin knows it, we know it, everyone knows it.

It's questionable whether Russia could pull it off. During last summer's Siberian forest fires, Russia had to let them burn out of control because all its trucks were tied up in its very limited Ukraine operation.
