He was the Dean of the Business School previously. I'm excited as heck for this for my alma mater honestly. I think he gets it and will continue the progress Dr. Bruno initiated while still maintaining some of the traditions and things that made campus special he seemed to ignore at times.

A ULM graduate and Winnsboro-native, Berry received a groundswell of support during the public-comment portion of the meeting. ULM faculty, students, local business leaders and elected officials endorsed Berry, including State Sen. Stewart Cathey Jr., R, Monroe, West Monroe Mayor Staci Mitchell and Oak Grove Mayor Adam Holland.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, a former ULM quarterback, endorsed Berry with a public comment.
“Over the past few months, I have heard from the ULM community about the need to have one of their own as president,” said Cathey, who attended the meeting.
“Dr. Berry is the very definition of a Warhawk. The show of support for Dr. Berry assured me that he is the best person to move ULM forward during these unprecedented times.”

His wife helped set my wife on a solid career path. She(my wife) was hoping it would be him.

Sheesh, ULM is such a dumpster fire. Hopefully he can put out the flames.

Swearingen was a bum.

Good for Berry. He is a good guy, IMO.
Same here. Groundbreaker.

That's great news. Hopefully an alum will pay attention to the alumni base.
I vote to drop football down a notch and compete for a national title every year. They've done it before you know.
They say the ULM athletic department budget is THE lowest in the nation. Improving that situation is a mighty tall order.

Football would be a step down in competition but everything else would be about even in the southland honestly, plus youd get the added benefit of more local rivalries to help attendance. Even if it was just temporary (~10-15 years) to build momentum and then move back up.

The mastermind behind ULM's move up to FBS was Richard Giannini, who moved on to USM and proceeded to undo everything that school had accomplished in athletics since 1970.
His weird fixation on having as many home games as possible, regardless of the opponents' quality, just went against everything that had given USM its small history of football success.
He turned one of the best football seasons in USM history into a lingering fart by accepting a Hawaii Bowl bid against Nevada-Reno.
He was caught completely flat-footed during the 2011-2012 FBS conference realignment and somehow managed to get USM blackballed by a group of schools it had been playing annually for decades.
His communication style bordered on frank autism.
Giannini's ultimate vision is a chickenshit regional AL / MS / LA league that's basically the Southland masquerading as major college football... kind of like the old MAC/Big West with its annual Mutual Masturbation California Raisin Bowl.
I'd like to say, "I don't know why we ever hired that clown," but I do know why. He spun a bunch of nice-sounding Christian rhetoric in the interview and talked about how God and AA helped cure his wife's partying. (The cure didn't stick.)

quote:Berry has already said he's against moving down. They want to continue momentum forward and do what they can to get ULM up to speed with the rest of the Sun Belt. Moving down would admit failure and be a "slap in the face" to those who worked so hard to get ULM to where they are.
I've said this since I competed there. This is what was said when asked about athletics in his interview FWIW.

That has worked for North Dakota State. That would actually be a pretty good idea for a smaller community. Being able to compete successfully as a FCS team would defiantly be a lot better than being an average team at best in a "mid major" conference.
