I got some rooms booked down by the station but have been told we need to find somewhere else, I'm not good with NO, so give me some ideas best place to stay that's close to the train an not gone have transportation.
Where are you currently booked at? There are several hotels nearby that you could walk to: Hyatt (next to the Superdome), Holiday Inn (infamous for the Mark Essex shooting spree), the Pavillion, and a couple of inns/suites.
If you have a ton of luggage, however, the Amtrak station also has Greyhound and city bus depots connected to it, as well as a few cab drivers waiting out front--and a new streetcar line was just extended to it. With a lot of luggage, I would take the streetcar line down Loyola Avenue a bit to one of the aforementioned hotels or keep riding the streetcar on down towards Canal Street towards the French Quarter and stay there.
It's a long walk from the train station to the French Quarter (like 15 blocks). It can be done but would be rough with any kind of luggage besides a backback.

So you be getting here at 4 on Saturday and heading back home on Monday? You only going to be here Saturday night, all day Sunday and Monday morning?
If so you may need all day Sunday and Monday morning just to see the WW2 museum. If your son is into history there is the Civil War Museum almost across the street.

A new park opened up this past week that sits on the river just south of the French quarter. I haven't been yet, but heard it is nice and has some cool views. The link to the parks website is: [link=(www.reinventingthecrescent.org)]LINK[/link]
