Thanks for all of the replies. He has been offered a 50% tuition scholarship to Rice, so that would ease the pain a little. He is pretty much deciding between Rice and Alabama, although we will visit SMU next week as well.

Tanglewood is the best part of Houston.
Better for rich families due to the proximity to private schools but Boulevard Oaks is a prettier neighborhood and more convient
Tanglewood/villages is becoming a mini dallas keeping up with the jones with Brairmeadow wives ready to take out a mountain of debt to get in the club

Boulevard Oaks is my favorite neighborhood in Houston. Lots of old money. Much quieter than River Oaks.

We visited Rice with my son. I liked it, but for whatever reason, it didn’t click with him and he chose not to apply.

Definitely needs to accept that

Phenomenal school. As someone mentioned, it's one of the top schools in the country let alone the South (Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, Emory). You can't go wrong there.

Rice and SMU are very different. SMU is going to have a co-ed and cocaine appeal to it. It is much more of a country club than Rice
knowing nothing about your son other than he is apparently a good student, you will sleep better if he is at Rice knowing there is less distractions due to its overwhelming nerdy, non-attractive and focused student body.
Also not knowing anything about your pocket book, SMU has shite ton of extremely rich kids and it is wierd social situation of he is working at applebees to get by while his friends are taking PJs to cabo. Great for connections but can be limiting socially

I can understand that. It's small (<5,000) and I'd be willing to be 1/3 of the student body is Asian, It's not like a traditional college or state school experience.

T20 school that along with Vanderbilt and Duke, makes up the best 3 universities in the South (if you consider TX in the South).
I don’t know if I consider Duke to be in the South
I don't know if I consider you to be capable of reading a map.

Looking at the university on google maps...
Man, they need a groundskeeping dept bad.

Better than Duke or Vandy?

Academically Rice >>>>>>SMU
But he's gonna see all the hot CoEds walking around SMU and then start thinking with his other head.

It's pretty freaking elite. It's just more of a MIT, California Institute of Technology type of elite. Generally speaking, you don't go to Rice for a humanities degree...
Rice is generally considered a top 15 or top 20 university in the States.

Don’t even consider it if you have to pay full cost of attendance

Wow, congrats. That's a tough one to get into. Great university, great area.
