Get more civilized family or cover the sofa or close the room.

When they gather for dinner lay out your expectations. Then remind as they forget. They would appreciate that!

My SIL got angry one year because somebody had the audacity to eat at the good dining table . Her guests were not "good enough" to be eating on that expensive table. I looked at my brother his head is just staring at the floor with embarrassment. Needless to say we don't get together with them often.

You can't put nice china and crystal in the dishwasher, I get it. I would tell them to put their plate in the sink and I will get it, but that is just me.

You didn't read OP correctly. He is bitching about the guests not putting their plates in the dishwasher.

They've been staying here for a week. I expect some level of cooperation. Especially, if they're close relatives not a bunch of distant cousins.

Before the next family gathering, you honestly need to move to a new trailer park.

Just stream some porn on your Apple TV while one of them is in the bathroom and then look toward the bathroom door with a disapproving look.

I am the bad aunt. I throw away or eat all the food on my nieces plate so they don't force her to eat it. "There's starving people..."
She's 4
Then we go hide outside and eat dessert

Verbally assault the ever loving frick out of them. If nothing else, maybe they wont come back next year.

Voila, problem solved.

You don't have a formal couch? Where do you take your formal naps? Probably on regular couch like an animal

Paper plates. Nobody likes washing dishes.

On the couch, give them a reason to not be in there/be somewhere else (put on something they don't want to watch on tv, etc). They're probably trashy and trashy = dumb = easily manipulated.

I genuinely don't understand you don't want them to leave their dishes about (I get that) but you don't want them to put them in the dish washer. Just fricking tell them where to put them. Putting them in the dishwasher is what most people deem to be polite.

Just made a happy plate out of some leftovers. AND I put it in the dishwasher just because.

it doesn't count when it's your own house!

Chinet at the noon thanksgiving ftw. I offered to clean up at that one.

How hard is it not to eat on the formal sofa or not putting plates in the dishwasher

Who is the 'formal sofa' reserved for, The Queen of England?

Also, if they put plates in a dishwasher, good for them!

People like this get a tongue thrashing from me and I don't care who it pisses off.
